This intermediate station on the Glasgow - Kilmarnock - Ayr (main) line of the (former) Glasgow and South-Western Rly. was also the junction station for that company's branch line to Ardrossan. It was opened (by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Rly.) on 23 March 1840, and remains in regular passenger use.
