Archaeology Notes

NO12SW 57.02 109 236

Contractor's groundworks were observed on the site of the old auction mart, located on the S side of the Carmelite friary. It was hoped to find some evidence concerning the friary burial ground or outbuildings. Mixed deposits of modern material relating to the railway yards were observed over natural clay. Nothing of archaeological significance was found.

NO 109 236 Five trial trenches were hand excavated in November 1994, in the north-western corner of the business park in advance of development. It was hoped to find evidence relating to the Whitefriars monastery, its graveyard, the precinct boundary or agricultural activity.

The excavated trenches revealed compact hardcore layers overlying infill/levelling layers of redeposited silty clay which contained 19th century pottery and some residual medieval sherds. Natural clay was reached at a depth of 1.50m.

The silty clay dumps appeared to be related to infilling and levelling for a large warehouse, recently demolished. Nothing relating to the Whitefriars' monastery was identified.
