Archaeology Notes

NO20SE 57 29964 01525

On the N side of the bridge over the railway at Markinch Station is one section of concrete road block and a length of anti-tank wall. A further long length of wall survives on the E side of the Station approach road and part of a road block is still extant (NO20SE 284). These once formed part of the Fife anti-tank line.

J Guy 1994; NMRS MS 810/3, 167-8

A short section of an anti-tank wall survives on the N and E side of the railway bridge (No.112).

Standing to 1.35m, the wall measures about c.9m in length and is 93cm in thickness. The wall has an outer skin on the S side and metal 'I' section girders vertically within the concrete. At the W end is the surviving part of the road block about 1.80m square standing to a height of 1.80m.

The wall defends the junction of the B 9130 and the minor road to Milton of Balgonie.
