Archaeological Notes

NN93NW 13.05 9077 3757

A cross-incised boulder is situated on the crest of a rounded ridge overlooking the mouth of Glen Fender with a fine aspect down Strathbraan. The boulder lies in the centre of a semi-improved field and appears to be earth-fast. The cross which is carved (40mm in average width and up to 30mm in depth) into the domed surface of the boulder, utilises a natural, weathered goove for the shaft, which is 0.55m in length. The arms of the cross, 0.28m broad overall are placed about one-third of the way down the shaft; they have been cut into the rock and may have expanded terminals.
There are two cups, within and towards, the base of the shaft which may be of natural origin.
