Archaeology Notes

NT27NE 143 260 764

The site of an earthwork holding a field gun commanding the coast road from Leith's St Nicholas Port to Newhaven, sited from the Pelham map of the seige of Leith, 1560. A further work, to the N, the 'new mount' may have been constructed to support an assault on the Citadel bastion after the mine had been blown, but is shown without guns and may still have been under construction at the time of the cease-fire.
