Archaeology Notes

ND16NW 83 1027 6818

Once an extensive distillery...but the track of it only remains. It was in working order as late as 1850.

Name Book 1876, Book 11, 91

Wolfburn (also Wolf Barn), Caithness (exact location unknown).

M S Moss and J R Hume 1981

A single unroofed building, annotated as Wolfburn Distillery, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet v). It is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1985).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 20 December 1995.

ND 10 68 (centre) A desk-based assessment and walkover survey were undertaken in February 2005 for a new housing development. Two previously unrecorded post-medieval buildings were noted (ND 10298 68128 and ND 10339 68071), both probably forming part of a farm named Wolfburn. Also revealed was the 19th-century site of Wolfburn distillery (ND16NW 83).

Full report lodged with Highland SMR and NMRS.
