Archaeology Notes

ND35SE 27 3724 5120.

(ND 373 512) A hoard of 73 coins was found on 30th January 1969 when excavating on the site for a new school at Hillhead, Wick. They were of 16th/17th century date, and of varied types from more than one continental country.

ND 3724 5120. The coins were found beside the footings of an old house. Site surveyed at 1:2500.

Some coins are in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) and Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh; a few in Wick Museum, and one in the Royal Cabinet in The Hague.

A hoard of 73 silver coins consisting of 46 from the Low Countries (1592-1684), 19 from the Holy Roman Empire (1620-1677), 5 English (Elizabeth, 1558-1603), to Charles I (1625-1649) and 2 Scottish (1601-4), which indicate a deposition date of 1684 or later.

Eleven coins of mixed nationality are in Wick Museum. The site is now grass-covered in the grounds of a school.
