Archaeology Notes

NS56NW 73 5217 6718.

Braehead farm appears to have been the main farmsteading on the Elderslie estate. First noted on Richardson's Map of Glasgow and Surroundings of 1795, this site probably dates to the period of landscape reorganisation on the Elderslie estate in the late 1770s.

The site is located in dense undergrowth and characterised by the existence of substantial trees around the main L-shaped settlement and on either side of the main access avenue. The remains are currently (1994) only one course high and the main structure is 20m by 10m at its greatest extent. There is no evidence of any of the outbuildings noted in the early editions of the OS plans, nor are there any traces of the lodge which lay at the end on the tree-lined avenue mentioned above, at NS 5216 6696.
