The name 'Ascog' [applied to a village at NS 1063] derives from Norse words meaning 'the boat-mound'.

At NS 1009 6353, on the summit of Hill of Ascog, a tree ring encloses poor, rocky ground. There is no sign of any antiquity.

A plantation of trees which occupies the summit of the Hill of Ascog stands within an oval enclosure measuring about 48m from NW to SE by 37m transversely. The enclosure and plantation are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Buteshire 1869, sheet CCIV).
