Accessing Scotland's Past Project

No 46 The Square occupies the end of a three-storeyed tenement, originally called Innes Place, which was probably built around 1830. The building was designed with a symmetrical facade, though the symmetry has been lost through later additions. For instance, the insertion of late nineteenth-century and modern shop fronts into the ground floor of the building destroyed a row of pilasters which once ran the length of the ground floor, though the replacement Victorian shop front has an elegant simplicity. Remnants of these can still be seen at the door of No 45 The Square. The design of this block is repeated at Nos 38-40 The Square.
