(NF 6527 0144) Standing Stones (NR) (Human Remains found)

OS 6"map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1904)

Two standing stones, 36 ft apart, stand in a line NE-SW, some 80 yds west of the main road at the township of Borve, on a sandy machair at an elevation of less than 50 ft above sea-level (RCAHMS 1928).

The Name Book notes that human remains have been found near the stones at various times.

RCAHMS 1928, visited 5 June 1915; Name Book 1878.

These stones are as described above. The northernmost is 1.4m high by 0.6m wide by 0.2m thick and leans to the east. The other stone has fallen and is now almost completely covered: no dimensions could be taken.

No information was found regarding human remains found near the stones, although a Viking burial (NF60SE 14) may be associated with them.

Standing Stones, Borve.

Some 80 yards west of the main road at the township of Borve, on a sandy machair, at an elevation of less than 50 feet above sea-level, are two standing stones of gneiss set 36 feet apart in a line running north-east and south-west. The eastern stone, which inclines considerably towards the east, is a rough pillar measuring 5 feet 5 inches in height, 2 feet in width near the base, and about 7 inches in thickness ; the other stone, which is overthrown, is a four-sided prism with blunt pointed top measuring 9 feet 7 inches in length, 1 foot 8 inches in breadth, and 1 foot 2 inches in thickness. (Fig. 194.)

According to the O.S. map human remains were found here.
