Gattonside Weir is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Roxburghshire, sheet VIII, 1921).

This weir apparently spans the River Tweed a short distance upstream (to the W) from the suspension bridge NT53SW 64. It is not indicated on the 1993 edition of the OS 1:10,000 map.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 30 January 2006.

Activities

Sbc Note

The medieval lade that fed Melrose Abbey remains extant and extends from the Melrose cauld (Gattonside weir NRHE 99810) in the west, through Melrose Abbey and sweeping to the south of the Annay, to NT 56330 34527 in the east. The lead is over 2km in length and formerly fed the corn mills at Melrose and Newstead. Combined with the possiblymedieval revetment of the Tweed known as the Battery (NRHE 86091) there is very good survival of substantial engineering works likely associated with Melrose Abbey.
